Google has added a new feature “Search from Camera” to Google Goggles which takes the visual search app one step further. The new feature allows the app to analyse previously captured images in the background. This means that you can just use the camera app to capture your favourite images and Google Goggles with automatically analyse the photo and if it finds any relevant information a notification will appear in the status bar.

Bear in mind though that since Google Goggles does its work in the background and requires internet connection to analyse and retrieve information you will notice an increase of data transfer. You can configure the app to perform backgroud searches only if you’re connected to a WiFi network though; very useful for those on limited data plans.

To enable that, go to Menu > Settings > Mobile Connection in Google Goggles and select “Search on WiFi networks only.”

Remember, photos you take with your phone’s camera will only be seen by Goggles if you enable the Search from Camera feature. Here’s how:

  • launch Google Goggles
  • tap Menu > Settings > Search from Camera
