“Eat breakfast like an emperor, lunch like a king, and dinner like a beggar”. How many times have you heard that line ? Unfortunately it’s the reverse for some of us, especially with the variety of food outlets we have around, it’s quite a challenge to not binge once in a while. If you’re in the mood for some German specialities, then Brotzeit German Bier Bar & Restaurant at Midvalley Megamall should be high on your list
Translated as bread time, Brotzeit is a fond Bavarian expression that refers to traditional Bavarian meal consumed in a biergarten. Contrary to popular belief, no they do not have pork knuckle and sausages every meal and are actually very big on bread. Did you know that there are more than 600 main type of breads and 1,200 different type of pastries available around Germany ?!?!
There were a whole bunch of us that were given the opportunity to try out some of Brotzeits dishes. Despite the large group of people, there was enough food to feed all of us. We started off the night with the Cold Platter.
Meats galore. Fresh cold cuts consisting of smoked chicken ham, hunter sausage, obatzda cheese, green peppers, gherkins served on a wooden board along with some German bread.
The sausages platter Würstelplatt is a great way to try a little bit of everything. There’s spicy chicken sausages, Nürnberger pork bratwurst, mini pork cheese sausages, weisswurst sausage and garlic sausages with sauerkraut and mustard.Honestly speaking this is something you must not miss, it’s that good but then again by the time you’re halfway through it’s hard to tell which was which. We finished them up in a hurry.
It’s good to have some greens to balance off all that meat and we got a chance to try out the Mozzarella cheese salad. Fresh, crunchy mixed salad with a generous serving of mozzarella cheese, cherry tomatoes, pesto sauce, olives and garlic croutons. Even if you’re not a fan of green the unique mix of tastes will definitely tingle your taste buds.
Next up was the Brotzeitflade Bayern which was basically a thin crust fladenbrot (flatbread) with tomatoes, cheese, black forest ham, cocktail onions and mushrooms. No need to worry about the crust being too chewy or too crunchy like a biscuit. If you’re a fan of pizza make sure you don’t miss a chance to try it out. Oh yah, they also have Spicy Bacon Pizza. Porkalicious !!
The highlight of the night, roasted pork knuckle. The holy grail of German delicacy, for some at least. Extremely crispy on the outside but tender and juicy on the inside. Mix it up with the brown sauce and sauerkraut and you’ll be having orgasmic explosions in your mouth. Though the portion might not look that big, trust me you’ll need a few people to help you finish this. Note : There are limited quantities daily, so best to call and book before you arrive.
You would think that with the amount of food that we’ve consumed, we would have had our fill right ? Well no rest for the hungry, next up was the spätzle with assorted melted cheeses. At first glance you will be wondering what on earth is in front of you but trust me despite being low on presentation it’s definitely high on taste. An excellent remedy to chase the blues away.
If you thought Pigs in a blanket was the bomb wait till you try the grilled pork fillet medallions wrapped in smoked bacon served with fries and sautéed mixed vegetables. Once you take a bite, it’s easy to see why it’s one of the best sellers. It was juicy and tender with the right amount of seasoning and salt. Definitely a must try
Potato wedges, it might sound simple but getting it right is definitely not that easy. Thankfully the wedges at Brotzeit were just perfect. Crunchy on the outside but soft on the inside. This is one dish you will want to eat while it’s still warm.
Now with so much food around thankfully we were also served some Paulaner to wash it all down with. I was really dying to try out their speciality, Mango Beer but unfortunately it was sold out. Will definitely need to try it out the next time I’m there. Not only does Brotzeit serve Paulaner on the tap but they also have a wide selection of bottled beers.
We also had a chance to try out their new lunch menu and thank god I don’t work anywhere near Mid Valley because I would be going there everyday to feast on their lunch specials.
Grilled meat loaf in Ciabatta bread served with coleslaw. Tasty yet light for those who want something different for lunch.
