There are some concerts that just come and go and then there are some which stay in your memory for a lifetime. For the many Train fans who were fortunate enough to catch them perform live in Kuala Lumpur on June 16 it was certainly the latter. It started off with the sound of a chugging train as thousands screaming fans filled the hall as the American pop band comprising a core trio of Patrick Monahan (vocals), Jimmy Stafford (guitar, vocals) and Scott Underwood (drums, percussion) got on stage.
The show started off with “50 Ways To Say Goodbye” and “This’ll Be My Year”, both songs are from their latest album “California 37”. The one thing that made Train’s performance stand out compared to other bands would definitely have to be how they interact and work the crowd.
Pat was in a playful mood as he went around the front of the stage and to the surprise of the screaming fans took hold of their camera and started snapping photos and taking videos of the crowd and the band performing. In short, camwhoring !! Those who were lucky enough to have their cameras grabbed by Pat would certainly have rare shots from the concert. There were certain awkward moments though, during the performance of “Mermaid” Pat actually forgot the lyrics of the song, I wonder how many actually noticed
Apart from that Train were also very generous that night as they kept giving away lotsa goodies ranging from signed T-shirts,posters and guitar picks throughout the show. Pat also managed to share his most memorable moment when the band performed “Marry Me” in Manchester,UK where he mentioned how moved and touched he was by the participation of the crowd singing along with the song that he didn’t even need to use the mic.
Not to be outdone by Manchester, everyone in the crowd starting singing on top of their voices when Train performed the song. A couple of lines into the song, Pat walked up to the front of the stage as he continued the song without the mic accompanied by the crowd. It was truly a magical moment as the fans and the band sang the song with just the assistance of the guitar. He declared that Malaysians certainly kicked Manchester’s ass, much to the delight of their screaming fans.
Another first for many there is the absence of an encore performance. Not that there wasn’t one but the fans didn’t need to wait for one as Pat explained how they don’t believe in making the fans wait for an encore and asked if it was ok if the band just continued on with their concert without a taking a break; everyone just went delirious and screamed even louder, cheering the band on.
The highlight of the night for many of course would be when they sang “Drops of Jupiter”. Other favourite tunes performed include the rocking “Drive By”, the soulful “Hey Soul Sister” and many other sing-alongs like “Meet Virginia”, “Bruises” and “Mermaid” as Train enthralled everyone with their unforgettable performance.
The night ended with Train giving away a signed guitar to the one that inspired them the most throughout their whole performance in KL which to the dismay of everyone went to a lovely young lady. She was on stage during the whole performance of Train for the last song of the night.
For those who didn’t have a chance to attend the concert here’s some videos. Enjoy
